It’s been about six months since I decided to ditch traditional shampoo and conditioner.
Over the six months period, I’ve noticed my hair was becoming a little dry, so I decided to just wash/ rinse my hair with just water, and only use the BS/ ACV every other time I washed my hair (which at this point is about once a week). So one week I would use the BS/ ACV wash/ rinse and then the next week, just water. Of course if I’m spending hours outside, I break out the BS for a little scrubbing and start my cycle over again.
Throughout the no-poo adventure I’ve also noticed a period where my hair got too greasy, too fast. So I cut out the ACV completely in my routine. And this is where I am right now.
So as a recap: If you’re experiencing oily hair, try cutting down on ACV rinse a little or even completely, OR slightly increase the BS. If you’re experiencing dryness in your hair, try increasing the ACV rinse or decreasing the amount of BS you use in your solution.
Anyway, I’m loving it more than ever!!!
My hair feels lighter and healthier than ever before. I don’t miss regular shampoos and conditioners a bit. I never thought I’d say that. I mentioned before that my curl went away (it was so sad!), but I’ve noticed it coming back. I also found some new curly hair (vegan friendly!!!) products, which I’ll share more on later.
I hope to change up my hair color soon – like within the next year or so (I guess that’s not really soon to some people) but if you have hair color the BS WILL strip your hair color over time. You’ll need to look into alternate no-poo methods or just go for some sulfate-free shampoos/ conditioners. This is an excellent article that explains a little about going no-poo and keeping your hair color from fading.
When I got layers put in my hair the other day, I knew ahead of time that the salon did not have sulfate-free products on hand so I bought some reasonably priced ones at Sally’s. The first time I was at the salon after going no-poo, I had to let them use regular shampoo/ conditioner and I noticed a significant setback. Even with the sulfate free products my hair felt heavier. Not sure if it was the shampoo so much, as it might have been the serum they used to give me a blow out.
I have been using this curly hair cream but over time for some reason it did not really help my hair curl. I noticed it becoming more wavy. One thing I did was get long layers, but I have been wanting to alternate to something more natural anyway. A few months ago I found the Gnarly Whale shop on IG. Their products are vegan friendly, cruelty-free, and very affordable. Their Hair Beach Waves smells like BLISS. And it works. I absolutely love it. This has actually helped some of that natural curl to come back.
As a curly head, early on I was pretty frustrated without conditioner. I took that for granted how it would magically get out all the tangles in my hair. When I started the no-poo adventure this is where I almost gave up. Over time I realized I was so used to washing my hair by lathering and getting soap suds everywhere. My hair would come out in knots since the no-poo method really doesn’t give you suds. In fact, it’s mostly water. So I was really just magnifying the problem by washing my hair the same way I would with traditional shampoo/ conditioner. I wash it differently ow. My hair is long (almost down to my back), so I wash the roots first, and scrub and scrub and scrub some more. Then I focus on the ends, but not as much as the roots. The ends (at least for me) are usually pretty dry compared to the roots, so I don’t want to dry them out even more unnecessarily. I let the BS solution wash over my whole length of hair, but only scrub the roots. Next, (when I was using the ACV) I would spray it only on my roots and not worry about rinsing it off. I noticed since I wouldn’t bunch my hair up in a ball on top of my head, the tangles weren’t as present. I also sometimes brush before washing my hair to help with the tangles. I also noticed that the Gnarly Whale Beach Waves product helps with the tangles.. AND they even have a Hair Detangler solution available!
One thing I get asked a lot from blog friends and people on IG is how does my hair smell? Well, I hope good haha! The vinegar smell does not soak into your hair, which is such a good thing! Honestly it doesn’t smell like anything unless I put product in it. In fact I remember the first time I put the curly hair cream in my hair after going no poo, the smell was intense! I like the way the hair cream smells, but I have never smelled it so strongly. I think between the shampoo, conditioner and then the hair cream, the nice smell always got lost or diluted but having that perk was nice. I’ve read that some people spray their perfume into their brush and scent their hair that way.
Anyway, that’s the update. Still loving it. Not looking back. :)
